Paris, France and Dallas, TX October 14, 1999 Taking their rightful place among such lodging industry legends as Conrad N. Hilton, J. Willard Marriott and Walt Disney, Accor co-founders and current Supervisory Board co-chairmen Paul Dubrule and Gerard Pelisson yesterday were inducted into the Hospitality Industry Hall of Honor, located in the University of Houstons Conrad N. Hilton College of Hotel and Restaurant Management. Also inducted at this years awards ceremony were Robert Crandall, former chairman and chief executive officer of AMR Corp. and American Airlines, and Howard D. Johnson (posthumously), founder of the Howard Johnson Restaurants and Hotels companies. Mr. Pelisson was joined at the induction ceremony by Georges Le Mener, president and chief executive officer of Accors U.S. economy lodging division, Dallas-based Accor Economy Lodging, which operates the proprietary Red Roof Inns, Motel 6 and Studio 6 brands. Mssrs. Dubrule and Pelisson opened their first hotel, a Novotel in Lille, France, in 1966. After a series of acquisitions, including the Courtepaille restaurant chain in 1974, the Mercure hotel chain in 1975, the Sofitel hotel chain in 1980 and Jacques Borel International in 1982, Mssrs. Dubrule and Pelisson created what is now Accor S.A. in 1983. Through new brand development, joint ventures and acquisitions, the company has grown to become the worlds third-largest hospitality company. Today, Accors portfolio includes 3,170 lodging properties representing more than 340,000 rooms and spanning five continents, and features proprietary brands representing all segments of the hotel industry, from luxury to economy: Sofitel, Novotel, Mercure, Ibis, Etap Hotel, Formule 1 (more) (Add One) and, in the United States, Red Roof Inns, Motel 6, Studio 6, and Formule 1. In addition to its lodging brands, Accor owns 50% interest in Carlson Wagonlit Travel, a global travel service, and in Europcar, Europes leading car rental company. Dubrule and Pelisson, along with those of the other inductees, will be memorialized through permanent displays and memorabilia within the Hospitality Industry Hall of Honor and Archives.
